Blue Economy Cluster
New opportunities for ocean-based industries.
Technology is changing the ways of collecting food, energy, minerals, and data from the ocean. Innovation in marine robotics, artificial intelligence, low-cost sensors, satellite systems, and data collection and analysis are contributing to creating a cleaner and safer future, provided they are used correctly. Therefore, the affirmation of the Blue Economy cluster will be structured in the smart specialization of the Knowledge City.
Research and innovation as fundamental pillars
The focus on knowledge production, research and its application in the regional business fabric will contribute to presenting competitive advantages at an international level. To this end, new research and innovation centers will be developed in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, focused on finding solutions for the various sectors of the Blue Economy.
The regional innovation ecosystem, bringing together universities, institutions and research centers and companies, has generated important advances and value. Taking advantage of opportunities associated with the exploitation of marine resources and the economy results from the existence of knowledge centers associated with geology, robotics or shipbuilding and repair, as well as a production base composed of chemical and pharmaceutical industries with the potential to use resources marine.
Nevertheless, the synergistic and networking relationship between public agencies, research centers and companies, should be enhanced through the coexistence and physical proximity between companies, research centers and public agencies.
The Knowledge City will be a pole of excellence in the sustainable exploration of the sea, a global center of competences for the Blue Economy, exploring the multiple opportunities provided by the ocean.
