Climate Resilient City

The agenda for a city resilient to climate change.

Rapid urbanization, combined with the impacts of climate change, has led to a significant increase in the impacts of rapid floods and extreme temperature events, aggravated by the effect of urban heat islands. Nature-based solutions, such as urban afforestation, can contribute to mitigate these risks, while also providing other benefits of ecosystem services, such as:

  • Promotion of biodiversity;
  • Carbon capture;
  • Improving human health.

Knowledge City as climate proof city

Since climate vulnerability is determined locally, the choice of measures also depends on the local context. There is a wide variety of adaptation measures:

  • Influence the local climate through urban design;
  • Rethink the urban water cycle;
  • Adapt buildings and infrastructure;
  • Change human behavior;
  • Increase the acceptance of discomfort and prevent impacts when an extreme event occurs, protecting the most vulnerable groups.

To reduce, at the same time, the consequences of floods, high temperatures and droughts, it’s possible to adopt a comprehensive approach. For example, rainwater from the wet periods can be stored underground and used to combat drought, and, through evaporation, heat.

The measures chosen will have a positive effect on other areas of urban policy, such as social diversity and biodiversity. Therefore, we are going to give to Knowledge City a climate adaptation framework that creates security in the investments to be made and conditions conducive to the attraction of companies, entrepreneurs and families.
