The green city

The Setúbal City Council works to guarantee an attractive “green city”.

The Setúbal City Council develops permanent efforts in areas of activity such as the increase and improvement of the network of parks and gardens of proximity that allow the recreation / active leisure and correct the effects of urban discomfort, in addition to the efficient use of water in the irrigation of spaces green.

The design of new spaces, with areas greater than 200 square meters, will continue the permanent commitment to civic and environmental education. Examples of this are the celebration of events such as Arbor Day and the Setúbal Mais Bonita project.

How to maintain the relationship with the environment

In the process of adaptation to climate change, whenever possible, native plant species are selected for the composition of green spaces. Setúbal maintains a concern with environmentally sustainable maintenance, with the use of materials that reduce the need for labor in routine tasks and the introduction of practices for the reuse of waste (such as chippings) and the efficient use of irrigation water, where it gives priority to automatic irrigation systems in the investment and conservation of infrastructures.

Respect for the natural relief of the land, with the promotion of natural vegetation on slopes and slopes, and the reduction of the application of pesticides in urban areas, namely in the control of weeds and pests and plant diseases, are some of the measures implemented.

The network of green parks in the city has been complemented by reinforcing the offer of neighborhood gardens – proximity green spaces -, which represent a guarantee of faster accessibility to this type of urban equipment.

The rehabilitation and construction of new green spaces allowed, since 2008, to increase by more than 30% the area of green spaces available in the municipality for the benefit of citizens.

With a team of over 70 professionals, including technicians, administrators, supervisors, gardeners, arborists, nurseries, plumbers, masons, chicks, watchmen, mechanics and cooks, the Division of Green Spaces (DIEV) of the Setúbal City Council, ensures a wide range of services to the population:
